Hi, I’m Ciaran.
I created Modern Éire because I was completely enchanted by travel posters and I wanted to see more of Ireland in a modern style.
My first collection was a series of travel posters promoting scenes in my native Donegal. The county had just been named the 'coolest place on the planet' by National Geographic. There was a lot of pride around and thankfully, people loved the prints and the business was born.
I create all the designs myself in Ramelton, Co. Donegal. I try to be as sustainable as possible in my work. A recent statistic showed that 40% of landfill is paper-based and if you ask me that's a lot of trees. I don't want to keep contributing to this waste. I use sustainable bamboo or recycled paper in my work and ensure that my prints last a whole life time while my packaging can either be composted or recycled.
I studied fine art at university and entrepreneurship at postgraduate level. Before I started my own business, I was an English language teacher (and teacher trainer) and lived on the other side of the world. I spent five wonderful years in Vietnam and after travelling through a lot of countries in search of beauty, I realised there was a lot to love about my home country.
Now, I'm influenced by Scandi design and pastel-colours. I think Irish design can be just as influential as any other design style - and that encourages me to keep creating 'that simple Irish look'. I think Irish vernacular architecture, heritage, and natural colour palette can provide plenty of inspiration in this pursuit.
If you would like to know more about me or the business, send me a message and let's connect.
