The Story

Perhaps the most iconic natural feature in the northwest, Errigal is the tallest of all the hills in Donegal. Standing at 751 metres, the mountain has two summits and the view from both is spectacular if you dare to cross the narrow 'one man pass' - not for the faint hearted on a windy day. The ever changing view from underneath is captivating as you drive via Dunlewey and Gweedore.

Paul Henry painted a scene of Errigal from another angle which the LMS railway company reproduced as an advertisement in the 1920s. If Henry had visited in late summer, he might have depicted a donkey hauling turf home in a wicker creel. A once common site here after the peats had been cut, laid and stacked by local hands.
